Mount Stewart

As usual, I took the kids out for the day today- Ian likes to clear up the house, and as it’s Mother’s Day, he has been doing some cooking!

I decided to take the kids to Mount Stewart for the morning, before collecting my brother Brian and heading to my Dad’s house for lunch.

Mount Stewart is a beautiful estate which is now owned by the National Trust. At this time of year, you can’t tour the house or formal gardens, but there is a lovely walk you can take around the lake.

The park has been beautifully laid out and even at this time of year, the colours are gorgeous. Also it’s one of the few places you can still find red squirrels here- the grey squirrels have eaten most of them and the Ards Peninsula is one of the last strongholds for the red variety! They are fairly prevalent as you walk around- I don’t think you can really miss them as long as you’re looking!

After feeding the ducks, we went for a walk around the lake, and Ricky did some jumping off logs while I abortively tried to take a good photo of him doing it! This is about the best one I got!

We stopped at the cafe on the way back to the car to get a snack. The restaurant wasn’t open because it was fully booked due to it being mother’s day- it’s great and very child friendly, and the staff are just lovely. There’s a really nice chef who has a mohawk, but he’s so great with the kids and nothing is too much trouble!

Lovely morning out, in any case! I’d say once the kids are old enough to go for a long walk, it could become a favourite!
